Or better yet, get a peek behind the curtain. Head to the streets around the American Museum of Natural History, where the balloons are inflated, and it’s a great place to snap a few photos. But you have to get there early.

For the shopper, there is no better place than NYC. Check out the stores lining Fifth Avenue and be the first to see the spectacular holiday windows. It’s also the perfect time to check out the Union Square Holiday Market, one of the largest in the nation. You will also find a great market in Bryant Park. If you want to get outside during your visit, head to Central Park. You can stroll around the park or even ice skate at Wollman Rink. Central Park has many fun things to do during your Thanksgiving getaway.

The park offers some great hiking options and many great views along the park’s famed Skyline Drive. There are also several accommodations along the route, including the Sklyand Resort. You probably won’t find any doorbuster Black Friday deals along this route, but you will discover at least six gift shops along Skyline Drive, the perfect place to pick up some holiday gifts.

The Pollack Dining Room of the Skyland Restaurant offers a great Thanksgiving dinner. It is one of the most popular in the National Park System—a buffet-style meal with all the traditional Thanksgiving offerings.
